One of the main reasons people still find it difficult to compost their leftovers is related to the old-fashioned and usually labor intensive process. The compost must be kept moist, it must be constantly turned so that it doesn’t rot and so on. However, Whirpool’s new innovation, Zera Food Recycler could be the perfect solution to that. It’s a new kitchen appliance that turns food scraps into rich fertilizer in the easiest way possible.
The way the machine works is pretty simple. It must be plugged in and then, once food scraps are thrown into the chute it starts the decomposing process. The top of the Zera is conveniently counter height, so all you have to do is just sweep your leftovers into the bin, with just one simple motion.
Zera has a carbon filter installed, to reduce odor and a plant-based additive that assists in the breakdown process. In just a week, the food scraps will turn into a pile of freshly made fertilizer, perfect for the garden. Plus, the machine can also be operated remotely, through a mobile app.
In the near future, Zera will be launched on Indiegogo, a crowdfunding site. This isn’t to actually raise money for it, but to gain support for an untested market. The Zera Food Recycler will retail for $1,199 later this year at select retailer. However, for a limited period of time, the machine will also be available for purchase on Indiegogo, for a special and more reasonable price $699.
